Really good players in the community will have been practicing these really specific to BK nuanced hotkey settings for ages. Some people buy the default game FOR the mod so they come with no experience. I recently learned a lot of newer players actually do not play regular default CoH but just buy the base game and jump right into the mod. One thing about the BK mod community is that it is mostly comprised of long time veteran players in fact I'd argue we have had a really big problem with elitism in the community especially in the PVP setting. This will ensure quality and polish in the mod with the little resources we have.Ģ. Moving to the QWERTY system (which MANY MODERN RTS games have been doing INCLUDING CoH2 and CoH3) is a lot simpler with fewer complexities in hotkey mapping. So we reach an difficult position of constantly chasing hotkey mapping problems. The work could be done but checking through everything is a lot of manual effort for a small team we more often rely on the community to report these bugs but it wouldn't make sense to also ask of them to go through the labor of verifying every ability. There are HUNDREDS of abilities in BK so it can get VERY tedious. So we would need to change smoke but what should it be? Ideally it'd be a letter in the word "smoke" so we'd have to check if M, O, K, E is being used for another ability with all units that use smoke. Obviously (S)print won't change because sprint is used for SO MANY other units. For example, (S)print and (S)moke for the commando squads are overlapping leading to major misclicks in a potential critical fight and one of them costs munitions. There is a lot of overlap of hotkeys between abilities and units. The start of the discussion for changes began with all the hotkey errors to begin with. Hotkey changes impact me as a PVP player more than usual players because it leads to very unforgiving mistakes in a higher stakes game.īut I truly believe the net impact of the changes is positive as it lead to less bugs and better onboarding experiences for newer players thus general stability of the game.ġ. I'm a veteran player with over 5000 pvp games. I understand your frustration with the hotkey changes, believe me.
